John Sims, the owner of Sun Valley Pottery, started his ceramic career while attending California State College in 1976. After graduating college, he participated in an apprenticeship program for several years at Earth Products Pottery in Reading, PA. He is currently working at the Earthworks Pottery Studio located in the National Transit Building Annex in Oil City, PA. He has continued to expand his knowledge in ceramics by attending classes at Clarion State College and at the Chautauqua Institute. His preferred medium is functional hand thrown stoneware and porcelain pottery. He utilizes glazing techniques found in high fire oxidation and reduction, salt, raku, electric and wood fired kilns. He has exhibited works at several shows in Oil City, Franklin and Clarion, earning several awards. He loves on a 50-acre farm in Venus, PA with his wife Peg of 32+ years and they have two grown children.
